May 29 – June 1 The Bowery Theatre
Tickets now on sale.
The Yellow Line, making its world premiere, is a gripping new work inspired by true events at Port Phillip Prison, which is set to close in 2025 amid major prison reforms. A Pasifika guard is tasked with teaching haka to inmates, uncovering deep truths about identity, justice, and redemption. But can culture and connection break the cycle of incarceration?
The script was researched and written (thanks to the Malcolm Robertson Foundation) by Alaine Beek (Essence Theatre Productions) and Berne-lee Edwards (Ngã Mãtai Purua) who worked collaboratively throughout 2024. Also thanks to Wyndham City Council and The Scanlon Foundation who are supporting the production of this new work.
We look forward to presenting The Yellow Line at the Bowery Theatre, St. Albans then at the Wyndham Cultural Centre in July. This marks the most ambitious and exhilarating endeavour Essence Theatre Productions has embarked upon to date, and we are delighted to collaborate with Ngā Mātai Pūrua Inc. in sharing this story that delves into the Victorian justice system through a Māori and Pasifika Lens.
